My name is Ava and I’m 12-years-old, I have been living on the boat since I was four. I was born in Australia on the Gold Coast and we moved to Colorado when I was one, where we lived for three years. We bought our boat in 2009 and moved onto it in 2010, after returning from the States.
I don’t remember a lot of the first few years on the boat as I was only young. I have never really helped with the sailing because my brothers and sometimes mum, helped my dad. I can drive the dinghy when we have the little motor on though. Over the years we have met many kid boats who we play with after school usually on the beach, where we swim or find sticks and ‘sword fight’ with them. In Malaysia I met my closest friend Siobhan off Totem, in Tioman, Malaysia; we’ve been with them for four years!
In 2015 we left Asia and went to Chagos, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Comoros, Seychelles and Madagascar they were great places, we swam with the kid boats on shore and sometimes the adults would have sun downers and we would have a barbecue too. It was great! I really enjoy living on the boat and traveling to other places, even if it means I get sea sick.
Last year we spent three months in Italy and France, I really liked Italy, they have great food and beautiful places. Utopia spent a year in South Africa, sadly all the other kid boats crossed the Atlantic and we stayed, but we got to see so many animals like; lions, elephants, buffalo, kudu, gazelle, cheetahs, servals, caracals, wild cats, hyenas, giraffes and many more.
This year we crossed the Atlantic with a boat called Divanty and are now in Grenada, there are many kid boats and I’m happy that we’re here. Every day we hang out at the pool or practice volley-ball with all my friends. I’m very lucky to live on Utopia; not many people get to do this. I’m very glad that my parents chose to go sailing!
